Routine Maintenance Checklist for End Dump Trucks

When you're running an aluminum end dump, your truck isn’t just your ride — it’s your business. Staying ahead of routine maintenance means fewer breakdowns, safer loads, and more time on the road (and on the job).

Whether you’re new to hauling or a seasoned owner-operator, this checklist breaks down the key maintenance items you should be checking weekly, monthly, and seasonally to keep your truck and trailer running strong.

Why It Matters

A blown tire, stuck hoist, or hydraulic leak doesn’t just cost money — it can put you out of rotation for days. Routine maintenance is the difference between dependable income and unexpected downtime.

🔧 Weekly Checklist

These items should be checked at least once per week — or daily if you're running full-time:

  • Tire pressure and tread wear
  • Lights and reflectors (headlights, brake lights, turn signals, trailer lights)
  • Trailer bed cleanout (check for leftover rock, sand, or stuck debris)
  • Hydraulic fluid level
  • Air brake system check
  • Trailer hoist movement and sounds (check for slow rise, leaks, or knocking)
  • PTO operation (engage/disengage properly)
  • Grease zerks on trailer and hoist
  • Check for any visible leaks (oil, fuel, DEF, hydraulics)
  • Confirm bed liner is intact and not warped or peeling

🗓 Monthly Checklist

Make time each month to go deeper with your inspections:

  • Inspect suspension system (leaf springs, bushings, shocks)
  • Torque lug nuts
  • Test hoist under load — observe for slow performance or signs of sticking
  • Check electrical system connections (battery terminals, trailer wiring)
  • Inspect tires for sidewall damage, flat spots, or dry rot
  • Full fluid top-off: engine oil, coolant, DEF, power steering, hydraulics
  • Inspect mud flaps and splash guards
  • Look for cracks or weld fatigue in trailer frame

🌤 Seasonal Maintenance (Quarterly or Weather-Dependent)

Texas weather might not bring snow, but it does bring heat, rain, and freeze-thaw cycles that affect your rig. Adjust accordingly:

  • Summer:
    • Check radiator for debris or bugs
    • Inspect fan clutch
    • Keep coolant topped off and mixed properly
    • Watch tire pressure more frequently in extreme heat
  • Winter:
    • Ensure heater and defroster are working
    • Grease moving parts more frequently
    • Check for moisture in the air brake system
    • Keep trailer bed clean to avoid frozen material buildup
    • Confirm wipers and washer fluid are in good shape

Pro Tips from 326 Trucking Owner-Operators

  • Clean your bed between material types. Rock fragments can contaminate sand or fines, and you won’t get paid for rejected loads.
  • Never skip your trailer grease points. It’s the #1 thing that helps extend hoist life.
  • Keep a shovel, broom, flashlight, and PPE in your truck at all times. They're your mobile maintenance tools.

Set It, Don’t Forget It

Create a simple log (even in your Notes app or glove box) to check off your weekly and monthly inspections. It’s an easy way to spot trends — and you’ll be able to show records if you ever need warranty work or repair claims.
